Local Planning Authority Awareness

One of the more recent additions to our portfolio of services is the consolidation of all the data provided by local planning authorities into regular reports, for use by network operators.

Historically operators have little or no notice of new buildings which block existing microwave links. This report provides a geo-reference to each planning decision along with the description of the decision. Further in-depth analysis will show if the decision will cause a link outage, giving plenty of time for an alternative transmission solution to be implemented.

Data mining also provides early notice of large scale build projects to allow for coverage teams to assess and anticipate any new coverage requirements.

This data can also be used in the link planning phase, adding to the due diligence process to protect the investment of installing a new link.

What is social media monitoring?

Social media monitoring should ideally be part of every company’s social listening strategy. Social listening is the process of monitoring social media channels for mentions of your brand, competitors, products, and anything else you consider relevant to your business.

Social monitoring tools are used to capture and gather information about what people are posting about you or your brand. The social listening part is more active and strategic and involves analyzing the data produced by your social monitoring for actionable insights—everything from engaging a happy customer to shifting your overall brand positioning strategy.

Why use social media monitoring tools?

Businesses use social monitoring tools for a number of reasons. First and foremost, social monitoring allows you to capture powerful insights into your customers, competitors, and industry influencers.

Instead of just eavesdropping for things of interest, it lets you target specific keywords and topics. You can then use these captured insights to influence your online presence and help improve brand sentiment.

To take full advantage of social media listening, you need to spread your social monitoring across several social media channels, and keep a constant watch. However, acquiring these insights takes times.

What are we focused on?

Currently we monitor both Twitter and Instagram for mentions relevant to mobile phone operators, that aren’t addressed to the operator directly. We aim to pick up background ‘chatter’ about coverage blind spots or opposition to new installation builds, which can give early indications of problems, that the operator would not become aware of through their usual channels.

This type of information can be helpful to operations departments and acquisition firms working on the operator’s behalf.

We have been involved in all aspects of mobile phone network planning from the early days of 2G rollout.

Covering a multitude of radio planning disciplines including RF Coverage planning, Access Transmission planning, Core Transmission planning and Transmission and RF Optimisation.

Currently we are able to provide LOS and MW Link planning services using the industry standard tool Atoll, which is loaded with a 1m resolution clutter package enabling us to conduct highly accurate desktop analysis. This is especially useful for Small Cell planning. We are actively involved in a number of network preservation projects where we are using our Lidar datasets and Local Planning Authority data mining tools to great effect.


Lidar is quickly becoming the technology of choice for all types of surveys. Airborne laser sensor equipment is used to provide a highly accurate 3D model of the terrain and clutter. We can provide recently flown datasets as clutter packages in a format compatible with most radio planning tools, enabling highly accurate desktop analyses to be conducted. This can reduce the need for site surveys and LOS surveys. In many cases it can negate the requirement all together. Using industry standard software the point cloud model can also be used in it’s raw form for highly accurate Line of Sight survey analysis. The services we can provide range from Path Profile production to full Freznel Zone clearance analysis. It can also be the source data for all types of outputs, including kml and shape files which can be used for contours or building and vegetation outlines.

DTM & DSM for Planning Tools

We are able to transform recently flown point cloud datasets into Digital Terrain Models and Digital Surface Models into formats compatible with most industry standard GIS planning tools, such as Atoll and Pathloss.

The benefits realised by having a planning tool which is loaded with a 1m resolution clutter package are immediately apparent to planning teams, enabling quick and accurate desktop analysis to take place. This is especially useful for Small Cell planning at street level, for time critical LOS or for areas where quick access for survey teams is not available.

We are able to provide an end-to-end service regarding the creation of the packages and the implementation of those packages into your planning tool.
